(Synopsis)
Listless geek Mizuto Irido and introverted nerd Yume Ayai seemed like a match made in heaven, connected by their mutual love for literature. Unfortunately, their differences gradually grew, and they separated just after their middle school graduation. But, as if by divine comedy, the two find themselves reunited as step-siblings.
A rivalry begins to brew between the former couple, both unwilling to acknowledge the other as the older sibling. In an attempt to "solve" this issue, Mizuto and Yume agree upon a rule: whoever crosses the boundaries of siblinghood norms loses, and the winner will not only be called the older sibling, but also get to make a request. However, now that they live under the same roof, the lingering memories they share start to influence their actions—possibly rekindling the feelings that may not have been fully extinguished in the first place.

My stepmom's daughter is my ex, also known as Tsurekano, is an anime series that I unexpectedly started watching in the summer of 2022. I'm thrilled to share my thoughts on Tsurekano with you today. It's an anime that connected with me on a really emotional level and gave the characters a life they'd never known.
Let's be clear: this anime isn't for everyone, and I understand that before we discuss why I fell in love with Tsurekano. Instead than debating people who might not find it appealing, I'd want to explain why I find this series so fantastic.
Let's discuss about the storyline first. It's true that the title itself gives away the main idea, therefore it's not particularly innovative. It stands out because of its simplicity, which provides a welcome diversion from the overly complicated plots and frequent misunderstandings that are all too usual these days. Tsurekano is realistic and engrossing, allowing spectators to lose themselves in a scenario that is utterly real.
The difference between the story and the plot is now crucial. Setting the scene by establishing the key characters and plot, the narrative is essentially a MAL description. On the other side, the storyline deepens the story, and Tsurekano does a fantastic job here. Each episode reveals the backstories of the characters, creating a puzzle of interwoven events.
Character interactions develop organically, which gives them a human feel. The evolution of Mizuto and Yume is interesting, whereas Isana's progress is utterly real. The difficulties step-siblings have to deal with over time are real and realistic, highlighting the frailty of relationships. We observe a variety of viewpoints via their trials, making it impossible to assign responsibility to any one person. It depicts real and precarious relationships.
Let's talk about the characters now. They can be obnoxious and irritating, I won't mince words. But there may not necessarily be a drawback to that. Being a likeable and multifaceted protagonist, Mizuto stands out. He may at first seem like your typical loner with a fondness for snappy retorts, but as his vulnerabilities gradually creep to the surface, he reveals his actual, awkward personality. His selfless efforts to help Yume covertly are actually heartwarming and are skilfully woven into the story.
Yume proves to be one of the most realistic characters in the anime despite her imperfections. Viewers identify with her attempts to become popular and her realistic vulnerabilities. She is a prime example of a flawed but true character since she has a tendency to make snap judgments and constantly takes action instead of seeking facts.
On the other side, Minami could come across as obtrusive, manipulative, and obnoxious. But she is not completely insane. Her exaggerated obsessions mimic real people's excessive conduct, sparking contemplation on how obscene and deceptive people can be.
Although Kawanami isn't extremely significant, she offers fun and could be Akatsuki's future love interest. Throughout the entire series, he continues to be a fun presence and adds to several funny scenes.
Isana steals the show as the best character, to say the least. Her charming character and introverted temperament come through, especially when she connects with the right person. Her interactions with Mizuto stand out as one of the most interesting "friends, but more" partnerships I've seen thanks to her odd statements and actions. Her straightforward vulnerability to manipulation provides insight into introverts and gives her character a welcome dose of authenticity.
I don't have any issues with the sound, either. The use of the comic and emotional sound cues enhances the viewing experience. The opening and closing themes are both scorching hot. With compelling images and a wonderful tune that is guaranteed to stick in your brain, the beginning in particular stands out as a standout single of the season.
The character designs really stand out, despite the art style's adherence to modern anime tropes. They may be bland to some, but they fit right in with the story's theme of strange coincidences in an everyday world with ordinary people. Project No. 9 merits praise for the excellent animation, which beautifully depicts the contrast between the main protagonists and the supporting cast.
In conclusion, I had a wonderful time traveling with Tsurekano. I found the movie to be really enjoyable because of the humor, the interesting plot, the real people, and the fantastic soundtrack. Along with other strong competitors like Lycoris Recoil and Shadows House, this anime stood out for me as the season's high point. You've just found your new must-watch series if Tsurekano suits your tastes. However, it's okay if it doesn't catch your attention—anime tastes are as varied as the medium itself.
